The Glitch and the Recovery

I have brought a line back up mid-shift. I have watched a process that was running clean an hour earlier come apart in real time, alarms going, management on the floor, every variable pointing somewhere different. The move in that moment is not to panic. The move is to isolate the variable, correct the input, and run it again. You do not mourn the lost production. You recover and move.

That is also how you handle a bad week.

The System, Not the Moment

Brian Johnson’s Heroic work gave me the term: glitch recovery. The concept itself runs older than that. The Stoics built their whole framework around the idea that the system corrects and continues. It is an error the system is designed to handle.

That framing is worth more than it sounds, because the language you use on yourself in the moment a streak breaks is the difference between a one-day reset and a three-week slide.

Most people treat a missed day like a verdict. They had a plan, the plan broke, and the break becomes the story they tell about why the plan was never going to work. The Stoics saw what sits underneath that reaction: the belief that the obstacle is the end, rather than the next thing to move through. A glitch is not a verdict. It is an input error. You correct it and run the process again.

What Actually Broke

Hell week at the plant runs Monday through Thursday. Day shift, rushed breaks, management on the floor the whole time. Last week the variables stacked hard. New tools, new process, everything hitting the fan at once, and I was the one there to handle it. That is not a complaint. That is the job.

The blog was supposed to ship Tuesday. It did not ship Tuesday. There was a situation Monday night that needed handling, and something important on top of it. I slept on the couch. Tuesday morning I was at Six Flags with family because I wanted to be there. That time was already on the calendar and it mattered to me. The post did not ship.

That is the glitch. One missed day on a Tuesday post, in a week where the variables stacked against it. Not a pattern. Not a collapse. A glitch.

The Recovery Protocol

The Stoics cared about return, not the record. Getting back to proper balance was always the point.

Here is what the recovery looks like in practice. I do not add the missed day to the current day and try to do both. That is how you break the current day too. I acknowledge the glitch, find what caused it, and run the next section clean. Tuesday missed. Wednesday ships. The cadence does not double up. It resumes.

The same logic applies to anything with a streak. A missed workout. A missed meal. A missed writing session. The answer is not to punish the current day for what the previous day did not do. Run the current day clean and let the missed day be what it was. A glitch, not a trend.

What Holds Through the Glitch

The kept promises did not stop because one output missed its window. I showed up at the plant through hell week. I handled the pressure on a new line. I made it to Six Flags because the people in my life were counting on that too. I am writing this now, on the other side of a stacked week, because the system did not collapse. It glitched. There is a difference.

The Climb does not require a perfect record. It requires a consistent return. Every time you come back after the glitch, you are proving something more durable than a streak. You are proving the system holds under pressure. A streak just proves things went well. A recovery proves the whole thing is real.

Run It Again

The line that went sideways last week is running now. The process corrected. The output resumed. That is what recovery looks like at the plant, and it is what it looks like on The Climb.

You do not get credit for the days that were easy. You get the compound interest on the days you came back. The glitch is not the story. The recovery is.

Identify the variable. Correct the input. Run it again.
